Active Sharing - Active sharing allows you to see who else is watching a video at the same time, or explore users' recent histories.
Address Book - You can keep a contact list of your friends to easily send them private messages and share videos.
Audio Swap - The audio swap tool allows you to add music to your video from our library of licensed songs.
Avatar / Channel Icon - You can use the thumbnail of any of your public videos as your avatar.
Blog - The official YouTube blog is at http://youtube.com/blog.
Buffering - The YouTube video player downloads a video as it plays. A buffer allows it to play more smoothly if the connection isn't fast enough.
Bulletin - A message posted on a user's channel and sent out to all of that user's friends.
Category - A video can belong to one of several topic areas, called categories.
Categories Tab - At the top of most pages. Displays featured videos by category.
Channel - A channel is a user's page. It contains a user's profile information, videos, favorites, etc.
Channels Tab - At the top of most pages. Top list for channels, by account type.
Comedian (account type) - In addition to performer information, comedian accounts can publish a schedule of show dates.
Comment - A text response to a video (on a watch page) or a user (on a channel page).
Community Tab - Here you can browse groups and contests.
Contest - Users can submit videos to contests, and other users can vote on them.
Design (channel) - You can customize the appearance of your channel.
Developer APIs and RSS - YouTube offers open access to key parts of the YouTube video repository and user community, via an open API interface and RSS feeds. http://youtube.com/dev.
Director (account type) - In addition to performer information, director accounts have advanced options for branding videos and the user's channel with custom text and graphics.
Director Videos (home page, watch pages) - A small selection of past featured videos and sponsored videos is displayed at the top of the homepage and on the right of every watch page.
Editors' Picks - The YouTube editors select featured videos on the homepage. Users can apply to be guest editors and select the featured videos for a few days.
Embedding - You can have YouTube videos appear inside other webpages and blogs. The code for this is on each watch page to the right of the video.
Favorite - From a watch page you can add a video you like to your list of favorites. Other users can browse your favorites on your channel page.
Featured Video (homepage) - These videos are selected by the editors. They will appear on the pages under the Categories tab.
Featured Video (channel page) - In your account settings, you can select a video to play at full size on your channel page.
Flag as Inappropriate - If you believe a video violates YouTube's Terms of Use, you may flag it from the watch page. Our administrators review all flagged videos. The same applies to groups and channel background images.
Flash - The Flash Player from Adobe Systems is a plugin for your web browser. YouTube uses it to play videos.
Friends / Friend Invitations - You can invite other users to be your friends. This allows you to share private videos with each other. You can send invitations from a user's channel page.
Group - Groups allows users to share videos and have discussions on a common theme. They can be found under the community tab.
Guru (account type) - Like the other special account types, guru accounts have extended performer information, profiles.

History - YouTube remembers the videos you videos you have viewed recently. The link is at the very top of every page and here. You can clear your history by clicking here.
Honors - YouTube tracks many statistics for videos. Honors are automatically granted by the system to videos which rise to the top.
Links (watch page) - You can see which sites videos are embedded in.
Metadata - This is data about your data. For videos on YouTube, this is the title, description, tags, etc. You can edit your videos' metadata even after posting them.
(videos for) Mobile - These videos are available on Verizon Wireless.
Money - Registering for the YouTube site costs nothing, it's free! Come sign up!
Musician (account type) - In addition to performer information, musician accounts can publish a schedule of show dates.
Partner (account type) - There is a page under the channels tab with videos from our major content partners.
Performer Info - Several of the account types allow extended profiles so you can share more about you and your videos.
Playlist - You can add videos to playlists to play them in order or conveniently share the list of videos with your friends.
Playlists (watch page) - Clicking here will reveal a list of all user playlists that feature the video you are currently watching.
Politician (account type) - These are candidates for the 2008 United States presidential election. We are exploring extending this to other election contests.
Post video - With this button below each video on its watch page you can conveniently share the video on social bookmarking sites or your blog.
Private Message - YouTube has a system for messaging like email. You can read your messages from your account page. You send a message to a user from that user's channel page.
Private Video - You can upload videos as private. These won't appear in search results, and can only be seen by your friends.
Processing Time - The time it takes a video, once uploaded to the site, to be fully entered into the YouTube system with all associated video information and representative thumbnails. Processing time is not to be confused with Uploading Time which is the time it takes for a video to upload from a user's computer to the YouTube servers. Videos will be available for playback soon after uploading even while they are unprocessed, but they will not show up in "Search" nor will they show all the associated information for the video until they are fully processed.
Quick Capture - You can post a video straight to YouTube with your webcam! Try it!
QuickList - Whenever you see a '+' on a video's preview image, you can add it to your QuickList by clicking the +.
Rating - You can rate videos by clicking the stars. More red is better.
Related Videos (watch page) - These videos are selected by a mysterious search algorithm. They might be related to the video you're watching!
Remixer - A tool used to make quick remixes or re-edits to your existing videos. The tool can only be used on your own videos and allows you to rearrange clips and add quick graphic elements and transitions, as well as choose different audio tracks for a newer remix of your older content. You can find the Remixer from your account page by going to "My Videos" and clicking the "Remix Video" button next to any video which you'd like to remix. You can also visit the Remixer here (http://www.youtube.com/ytremixer).
Search - There is a search box at the top of every page. Accepts usernames, video titles, descriptions, tags...
Share Video (watch page) - You can have YouTube email a video link to a friend.
Stream - Join streams to chat with others who are watching the same video you are.
Subscription - You can subscribe to another user's channel or favorites, or to a tag. You will see that user's videos/favorites, or videos with that tag, in your subscription center. The most recent will appear for you on the homepage.
Tags - Tags are an associative heuristic for interest. You can subscribe to a tag to see new videos with that tag as they are added to the site.

Top List/Browse Pages - The statistics system's algorithms collect videos here, granting them honors.
Video Identification - As a part of YouTube’s initiative to protect copyright holders, this tool that allows YouTube partners to identify and claim their copyrighted video content that was unofficially uploaded to the site. As propriety videos are discovered and claimed, partners now have the option to place an ad on the video, offering a new revenue stream, or remove the video from the site. Video Identification also enables users to keep the uploaded video on their channel, allowing them to embrace further online video.
Video Response - A video can be associated as a reply to another, much like a text comment.
Videos Tab - At the top of most pages. Displays honored videos by category.
Vlog/Video Log - You can set a playlist as your vlog, and the videos on that playlist will appear on your channel along with descriptions you can optionally add to them.
Watch Page - The page with the full-sized video, all of the metadata, comments, etc.
Your Subscriptions (home page) - When you subscribe to users' channels, the most recent videos those users have uploaded appear here.
YouTube - The best video sharing site on the net!
YouTuber (account type) - A 'normal' account. If you don't post videos, this this is the best way to share the videos you like with your friends.
You'll need to have a device that can capture digital movies—this could be a camcorder, digital camera, or even your cell phone! You copy the movies to your computer, and then you can either upload them as-is or edit them with software such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to add titles and special effects. For some types of cellphones and mobile devices, you can also upload to YouTube directly, without copying the file to your computer first.

If your phone has video and multimedia messaging (MMS) capabilities, you can probably upload videos from your cell phone or other mobile device. Here's how to set it up:
- Log in to YouTube and go to the "My Account" page.
- Under "Account Settings," click the "Mobile Upload Profiles" link.
- Click the "Create Mobile Profile" button and enter the information required.
- Click the "Create Profile" button.

- Log in to YouTube. Make sure your camera is attached to the computer and working.
- Go to the "Quick Capture" page (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_quick_capture).
- Enter the information about your video in the left column. This is required before you begin recording.
- If you get a message that says "www.youtube.com is requesting access to your camera and microphone," click the "Allow" button.
- If you don't see a picture in the record section, you may need to choose a different video source from the video dropdown in the "Record Video" window.
- Once you see a picture coming from your camera, click the "Record" button to start recording your video.
- When you're finished recording, click the "Done" button if you're satisfied with your video, or click the "Re-Record" button if you'd like to try recording it again.
If you're having trouble using QuickCapture, you may want to make sure any firewall software you may have is allowing the connection to our server. If you're on a corporate or school network the connection may be blocked. You might want to check with your network administrator to find out what restrictions your network's under.
What video file formats can I upload?
We've found that files converted from .wmv to one of the other formats our webpage accepts generally have a lower playback quality than other file formats. If you have your source video in a format other than a .wmv file, you may want to encode directly to MPEG4 (DivX, Xvid, SVQ3) at 640x480 resolution, with 64k Mono MP3 Audio. If you have a source .wmv in high bitrate and larger resolution you may want to convert to MPEG4 at full resolution and then resizing to 320x240 using a high quality resizing algorithm - this can help reduce the number of artifacts you end up with.

- From your desktop, click the "Start" button.
- Select "Run".
- Type: moviemk and click the "OK" button.
- Drag or import the image files to the "Collection Window".
- Drag the file down to the "Time Line" pane at the bottom.

- At the top, select "File" and "Save Movie File".
- Under the movie selection select "The Web".

- Go to your account page.
- Click the "My Videos" link.
- Click the "Remix Video" button to the right of the video you'd like to change.
How do I use the Remixer?
You can start using Remixer by dragging content from the "My Videos" media bin on the right into the main viewing window or the timeline below it. Once you've placed content within the editor, you can edit, transition and remix that content. In addition, you can layer captions, borders, or other graphics over the content and try out different soundtracks. You can do all of this from within Remixer simply by dragging and dropping content from the media bins into the appropriate areas of the editor.
Graphics, captions, borders, and video can be dragged into the timeline. Transitions can only be dragged into the smaller boxes labelled with arrows which appear between clips in the timeline. Audio can only be dragged into the box labelled, "Drag Audio Here" (just below the timeline).
You can continually preview your work by clicking the "Preview" button located to the bottom left of the editor. From there, you can continue to trim, sequence and eventually publish and share your content.

The "Publish" button is located to the bottom-left just to the right of the "Preview" button. When you click the "Publish" button, a pop-up window will appear asking for the "Title", "Details", and "Tags" of the video. After entering the appropriate information, click "Done". The remix will be compiled and, after a short uploading period, will appear in your YouTube account. Now you're ready to share your awesome new remix with all your friends!

How do I upload a video? + Video
Once you’ve finished editing your video, made sure it's less than 10 minutes, smaller than 100MB, and in an acceptable format, you're ready to upload it.
- Click "Upload Videos" in the upper-right-hand corner of any YouTube page.
- Enter as much information about your video as possible, including Title, Description, Tags, and Category. The more information you include, the easier it is for users to find your video!
- Determine if you want your video set to Public or Private.
- Click the "Upload a Video" button.
- In the next window, click the "Browse" button to browse for the video file. Select the file you want to upload.
- Click the "Upload Video" button.
If you're receiving an error with your Upload, you might want to make sure you're attempting to upload a file that's recognized by YouTube. YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras and camcorders, and cell phones in the .AVI, .MOV, .WMV, and .MPG file formats.

Why isn't my video showing up in search? + Video
Depending on site traffic, changes to video information can take 8 hours or more to show up in the search index after they've been uploaded, changed, or removed. This includes changes to tags, ratings, views, and comments. Please be patient -- the video will show in the search index shortly. To bypass this time, you may want to send your friends the link of the video via email or private message.
To find videos that were recently uploaded, you may want to sort by "Date Added". To do this, search for the terms that describe the video. From the search results page, click the "Date Added" link on the top of the screen. This will allow you to see the most recently uploaded videos first.
Note that unless the username of the uploader is specified as a tag it may not be indexed for a video search. To find a user (and their videos), perform a search for their username and then select "Channels" on the left side of the page.
How long does it take to process a video after it's been uploaded?
If after 8 hours you still see a status message next to the video saying "Uploaded (processing, please wait)," try removing the video from our site and uploading it again. To do this, simply click the "Remove Video" button below the video in question in "My Videos" (http://youtube.com/my_videos) and go through the full upload process again.
Make sure your video is under 10 minutes in length. We accept most video file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, there may be a problem with the video compression you're using. We recommend the MPEG4 format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio.

Also, our system runs a checksum on all video files that are uploaded to avoid duplicate videos. Simply changing the file name will not resolve this. Please remove the video and edit its length or compression. Then you should be able to upload the video again.

How long/large can my video be?
Videos uploaded through YouTube's Single File Uploader have to be under the 100MB file size limit. The longer the video is, the more compression will be required to fit it into that size. For that reason, most videos on YouTube are under five minutes long and there is a 10-minute length limit for all videos.
You can compress your video using movie editors, like Windows MovieMaker or Apple iMovie. Programs like these allow you to edit your videos, add soundtracks, and compress file sizes.

Can I upload videos that are longer than 10 minutes?

What does "Invalid file format error" mean?
If you're using Windows Movie Maker, it's also possible that you tried to upload your .MSWMM file. This is not an actual movie file. An .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. If you're satisfied with your movie, choose the "Publish Movie" or "Save Movie File" option (depending on which version you have) under the "File" menu and create a movie file such as .avi or .wmv.

How do I use the YouTube Uploader?
- Log in and click the “Upload” link in the upper right corner of any YouTube page.
- On the right side of the page, click the “Use multi-video uploader” button.
- You’ll immediately receive the following message: “YouTube Uploader app not running – you will be redirected to the install page.”
- Click “OK.”
- Click the “Install Windows Uploader” link.
- You’ll be asked if you want to save the “YouTubeUploaderSetup.exe” file. Click the “Save File” button and specify where you’d like the file to be saved.
- Open the file once it’s been saved to your computer and it will install the Uploader.
To upload multiple or large videos, follow the steps below:
- Click the “Add Videos to Upload” button.
- Select the video(s) you’d like to upload.
- Once you’ve added all the videos you’d like to upload and confirmed that the total file size is less than 1GB, click the “Upload Videos” button.

- Click "Start" in your Windows Taskbar and choose "Control Panel" > "Add or Remove Programs."
- Click YouTube Uploader.
- Click the "Remove" button.

- Click the Windows logo icon at the bottom left of your Windows Taskbar.
- In the "Start Search" box type the following: control panel
- Open the "Programs and Features" icon.
- Double click "YouTube Uploader."
- Click "Yes" to confirm the removal of the YouTube Uploader.
Why do I see an error when I try to install the YouTube Uploader?
- You tried to run YouTubeUploaderSetup.exe with no internet connection. A connection to the internet is needed to complete the install.
- You're on a proxy server which requires authentication. Please note that we're currently unable to support this type of proxy.
- Your firewall, anti-virus software, or proxy is preventing the
program from accessing the Internet. In this case, you need to add it
to your security software's exceptions list. If you're using Windows
firewall, you can add this program by following these steps:
- Click "Start" in your Windows Taskbar and choose "Control Panel" > "Windows Firewall."
- Select the "Exceptions" tab and click the "Add Program" button.
- Click "Browse" and select "My Computer" from the left side of the window.
- Select "Local Disk (C:)" and click "Open."
- Double-click "Program Files" > "Google" > "Common."
- Select the folder with the highest number and open it.
- Choose the file "GoogleUpdate.exe."
- If you're using other firewall software, please visit that program's website for specific instructions to add applications to the exceptions list.
- You may not have the latest updates for Windows XP. If you're not currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2, please try upgrading Windows.
How do I remove one of my videos?
- Log in and click the "My Account" link in the upper right.
- Click the "My Videos" link in the upper left.
- Click the "Remove Video" button below the video you'd like to remove.
- Click the "OK" button.
How do I change or add to the information I entered about my video?
- Click the "My Videos" link in the upper right corner.
- Click the "Edit Video Information" link under the video you want to edit.
- From the next screen, you can change, add to, or delete whatever information you'd like about your video, including permissions settings (allowing comments, responses, ratings, etc.).
I see the "Upload Complete" page for a previous video after I finish uploading a new one. What happened?
Please make sure any 3rd party acceleration or security software is disabled or excludes YouTube.com. You may also want to clear your cache and cookies before uploading again.
