You'll need to have a device that can capture digital movies—this
could be a camcorder, digital camera, or even your cell phone! You copy
the movies to your computer, and then you can either upload them as-is
or edit them with software such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to add
titles and special effects. For more detailed information, read the Making and Optimizing Your Videos guide.
For some types of cellphones and mobile devices, you can also upload
to YouTube directly, without copying the file to your computer first.
You can find some great and comprehensive tips in our Video Toolbox,
check it out! You can find it linked at the bottom of most pages,
including our homepage, and our
toolbox.
Do I have to have a camcorder to make videos?
No. While camcorders are a great way to make videos, they aren't the
only one. You can make videos with a webcam, digital camera, or even
some cellphones.
How do I put videos from my mobile device onto YouTube?
If your phone has video and multimedia messaging (MMS) capabilities,
you can probably upload videos from your cell phone or other mobile
device. Here's how to set it up:
- Log in to YouTube and go to the "My Account" page.
- Under "Account Settings," click the "Mobile Upload Profiles" link.
- Click the "Create Mobile Profile" button and enter the information required.
- Click the "Create Profile" button.
When your profile is set up, you will be given an email address similar to this:
1111111111@mms.youtube.com.
When you want to upload a video taken with your phone, email it to that
address. After it's uploaded, you can go to YouTube and edit the
information about the video if you want
How do I use my webcam with YouTube?
There are two ways to use your webcam with
YouTube. You can record
video using the software that came with the camera, and then upload it
to YouTube, with or without editing first. You can also record directly
to YouTube using the
QuickCapture feature.
What is QuickCapture and how do I use it?
QuickCapture is a way to record video directly into YouTube. You need
to have a webcam or camcorder attached to your computer and a confirmed
email address to use this feature.
To record and upload video using QuickCapture:
- Log in to YouTube. Make sure your camera is attached to the computer and working.
- Go to the "Quick Capture" page (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_quick_capture).
- Enter the information about your video in the left column. This is required before you begin recording.
- If you get a message that says "www.youtube.com is requesting access to your camera and microphone," click the "Allow" button.
- If
you don't see a picture in the record section, you may need to choose a
different video source from the video dropdown in the "Record Video"
window.
- Once you see a picture coming from your camera, click the "Record" button to start recording your video.
- When
you're finished recording, click the "Done" button if you're satisfied
with your video, or click the "Re-Record" button if you'd like to try
recording it again.
When you click the "Done" button, your video is automatically uploaded
to
YouTube and starts processing. You can edit information about the
video by going to the "
My Videos" page (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos).
If you're having trouble using QuickCapture, you may want to make sure
any firewall software you may have is allowing the connection to our
server. If you're on a corporate or school network the connection may
be blocked. You might want to check with your network administrator to
find out what restrictions your network's under.
What video file formats can I upload?
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI,
.MOV, and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and
cell phones.
We've found that files converted from .wmv to one of the other formats
our webpage accepts generally have a lower playback quality than other
file formats. If you have your source video in a format other than a
.wmv file, you may want to encode directly to MPEG4 (DivX, Xvid, SVQ3)
at 640x480 resolution, with 64k Mono MP3 Audio. If you have a source
.wmv in high bitrate and larger resolution you may want to convert to
MPEG4 at full resolution and then resizing to 320x240 using a high
quality resizing algorithm - this can help reduce the number of
artifacts you end up with.
How do I edit my video?
Most computers come with some sort of video editing application already
installed, such as Apple iMovie or Microsoft Movie Maker. Using these
programs, you can easily edit your videos, add soundtracks, change the
file type, compress the file size, etc.
There are also more advanced editing programs available for purchase or
download online. We encourage you to look around and find the editing
software that's right for you.
How do I get a video from my camcorder onto my computer to upload to YouTube?
If you already have a digital camcorder (one that captures in Digital8,
MiniDV, HDV, or any of the DVD formats), then you're ready to start
shooting your masterpiece. Your camcorder will need some kind of direct
connection to your computer, either to the USB or FireWire ports or by
inserting the DVD you've recorded. Once you've downloaded the video
from the camera, you can upload it to
YouTube or bring it into an
editing program to play with it some more.
If you have an analog camcorder (one that uses VHS, VHS-C, SVHS-C, 8mm,
or Hi8 tape), you can still get your videos onto YouTube. It will
require an extra step and some additional equipment, though, since
these camcorders are not usually equipped with computer connections.
You'll need to digitize the video with a converter box, which will
convert the analog signal from the camcorder to a digital signal that
the computer can understand. After the video has been digitized, you
can manipulate it further or upload it.
When you're finished with the digitizing and are ready to upload it from your computer to the site, check our Help Center Uploading Entries for further information if you need it.
What is an .MSWMM file?
A .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. By saving the
project, it allows you to return to the movie and make modifications at
a later time. However, if you're satisfied with the movie and would
like to upload and share the result through YouTube, you will need to
choose "Save Movie File" under the "File" menu (which is different from
"Save Project", which creates the .MSWMM file).
What is an .mov file?
Files saved with a .mov extension are QuickTime movies. They are often
created by iMovie on a Mac, but other video editing programs can also
save in this format. QuickTime .mov files can be uploaded to YouTube
without any additional conversion.
How do I change the audio track in my video?
Want to turn your masterpiece into a music video? Ready to refresh your
soundtrack? YouTube now offers a simple way to add a different audio
track to your video. It's called AudioSwap, and we're trying it out on
TestTube (http://youtube.com/testtube).
If you'd like to try it on one of your videos, you should first make sure it's alright to have your audio
permanently replaced for that video. If you're okay with that, head to our
AudioSwap
page (http://youtube.com/audioswap_main), and click the "Try AudioSwap"
button. You'll then be able to access a page showing your video on the
right and the audio tracks you can choose from on the left.
Select a genre, artist, and track – don't worry, you can play around
with as many as you want before adding one to your video. Keep the
length of your video in mind, making sure the audio track you select is
as long or longer than your video so your entire video has sound. Once
you've selected a track, click the "Publish Video" button. When you're
asked if you want to change your audio track, click the "OK" button.
Depending on the length of your video, it may take some time to update
the audio.
How do I make a video out of JPEG images?
Here are a few steps to convert JPEG images into videos by using Windows Movie Maker.
- From your desktop, click the "Start" button.
- Select "Run".
- Type: moviemk and click the "OK" button.
- Drag or import the image files to the "Collection Window".
- Drag the file down to the "Time Line" pane at the bottom.
- Edit the images until they appear the way you prefer.
- At the top, select "File" and "Save Movie File".
- Under the movie selection select "The Web".
- Click the "Next" button.
- Name the movie and click the "Next" button.
- Click the "Show more choices" link
- If you'd like to use our Single File Uploader, make sure your video is under 100MB. If your file's between 100MB and 1GB, you'll have to use the YouTube Uploader.
Once you've completed these steps, your movie will be ready to be uploaded to YouTube!
What is the Remixer?
The Remixer is a great tool for quickly editing or remixing content.
Remixer allows you to sequence and add footage, transitions, borders,
captions, and audio.
You can find the remixer here (http://youtube.com/ytremixer) or by follow ing the steps below:
- Go to your account page.
- Click the "My Videos" link.
- Click the "Remix Video" button to the right of the video you'd like to change.
How do I use the Remixer?

http://www.youtube.com/ytremixer.
You can reach it by visiting your account page, clicking the "My
Videos" link, and clicking on the "Remix Video" button next to one of
your uploaded videos.
You can start using Remixer by dragging content from the "My Videos"
media bin on the right into the main viewing window or the timeline
below it. Once you've placed content within the editor, you can edit,
transition and remix that content. In addition, you can layer captions,
borders, or other graphics over the content and try out different
soundtracks. You can do all of this from within Remixer simply by
dragging and dropping content from the media bins into the appropriate
areas of the editor.
Graphics, captions, borders, and video can be dragged into the
timeline. Transitions can only be dragged into the smaller boxes
labelled with arrows which appear between clips in the timeline. Audio
can only be dragged into the box labelled, "Drag Audio Here" (just
below the timeline).
You can continually preview your work by clicking the "Preview" button
located to the bottom left of the editor. From there, you can continue
to trim, sequence and eventually publish and share your content.
How do I add videos to my Remixer library?
To add videos to your remixer library, they have to be uploaded as
public videos to your YouTube account. Once they're uploaded, they'll
automatically appear in the media-bin labelled, "My Videos" within
Remixer.

How do I upload a video? + Video
Once you’ve finished editing your video, made sure it's less than 10
minutes, smaller than 100MB, and in an acceptable format, you're ready
to upload it.
- Click "Upload Videos" in the upper-right-hand corner of any YouTube page.
- Enter
as much information about your video as possible, including Title,
Description, Tags, and Category. The more information you include, the
easier it is for users to find your video!
- Determine if you want your video set to Public or Private.
- Click the "Upload a Video" button.
- In the next window, click the "Browse" button to browse for the video file. Select the file you want to upload.
- Click the "Upload Video" button.
It can take from a couple minutes to an hour for your video to upload to
YouTube.
If you're receiving an error with your Upload, you might want to make
sure you're attempting to upload a file that's recognized by
YouTube. YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras and
camcorders, and cell phones in the .AVI, .MOV, .WMV, and .MPG file formats.
Have more than one video file to upload? Have a file that's larger than 100MB?

Why isn't my video showing up in search? + Video
Depending on site traffic, changes to video information can take 8
hours or more to show up in the search index after they've been
uploaded, changed, or removed. This includes changes to tags, ratings,
views, and comments. Please be patient -- the video will show in the
search index shortly. To bypass this time, you may want to send your
friends the link of the video via email or private message.
To find videos that were recently uploaded, you may want to sort by
"Date Added". To do this, search for the terms that describe the video.
From the search results page, click the "Date Added" link on the top of
the screen. This will allow you to see the most recently uploaded
videos first.
Note that unless the username of the uploader is specified as a tag it
may not be indexed for a video search. To find a user (and their
videos), perform a search for their username and then select "Channels"
on the left side of the page.
How long does it take to process a video after it's been uploaded?
Processing time varies greatly depending on the format of your original
video, file size, and upload traffic. This could take anywhere from a
few minutes to several hours.
If after 8 hours you still see a status message next to the video
saying "Uploaded (processing, please wait)," try removing the video
from our site and uploading it again. To do this, simply click the
"Remove Video" button below the video in question in "My Videos" (http://youtube.com/my_videos) and go through the full upload process again.
Make sure your video is under 10 minutes in length. We accept most
video file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video
meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, there may be a
problem with the video compression you're using. We recommend the MPEG4
format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio.
How long are my videos available on YouTube?
Videos stay on YouTube until the members who uploaded them choose to take them down. Videos which violate the
Terms of Use (http://www.youtube.com/t/terms) may be taken down by YouTube.
How long will my video take to upload?
Depending on your connection speed and the size of the video, it can
take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to upload a video.
Generally, if you have a high-speed Internet connection you can expect
the upload to take somewhere between 1-5 minutes for every 1MB.
However, the experience is different for every user because of the
variation in connection speeds.
How do I get a video from my camcorder onto my computer to upload to YouTube?

MiniDV, HDV, or any of the DVD formats), then you're ready to start

can manipulate it further or upload it.
When you're finished with the digitizing and are ready to upload it from your computer to the site, check our Help Center Uploading Entries for further information if you need it.
Do I have to sign up to upload videos?
Yes. Since videos are attached to your profile, you must sign up as a
member to upload videos. Becoming a member also allows you to save
videos, create Playlists, and leave comments, among many other
features.
Can I replace a video and retain the old view count, comments, and ratings?
There is currently no way to replace an old video with a new one and
retain the original view count, comments or ratings. You'll have to
start over with your newer video.
Also, our system runs a checksum on all video files that are uploaded
to avoid duplicate videos. Simply changing the file name will not
resolve this. Please remove the video and edit its length or
compression. Then you should be able to upload the video again.
What video file formats can I upload?
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI,
.MOV, and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and
cell phones.

What's the best format to upload for high quality? + Video
We recommend the following settings:
- MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
- 640x480 resolution (* most updated recommendation)
- MP3 audio
- 30 frames per second
Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look better on YouTube.
I can't upload the video from my DVD onto YouTube. What do I do?
DVD files (such as .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files) can't be uploaded to
YouTube. These are not actual video files but files used as part of the
DVD container format. Our recommended file format is MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid,
or SVQ3 rather than h.264) at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio (64k
mono).
You can learn more about uploading videos here.
Before uploading a video, you may want to go through our Terms of Use and Copyright FAQ. This may give you a better understanding of the type of videos you can upload.
Can I upload any other type of content to YouTube besides video?
YouTube.com is designed to host and share videos only. Other types of
media including music (MP3s, etc.), pictures (JPEGs, etc.), and flash
files that don't contain a video stream can't be processed by our
system and will be rejected. You can still have fun with these other
types of media by turning your music into a music video or making a
video slideshow out of your pictures.
See our Video Toolbox for lots of other great tips and ideas.
How long/large can my video be?
There are two ways to upload your video: by using our Single File
Uploader and the YouTube Uploader. Depending on which upload method you
choose, your videos can be up to 100MB or up to 1GB.
Videos uploaded through YouTube's Single File Uploader have to be under
the 100MB file size limit. The longer the video is, the more
compression will be required to fit it into that size. For that reason,
most videos on YouTube are under five minutes long and there is a
10-minute length limit for all videos.
You can compress your video using movie editors, like Windows
MovieMaker or Apple iMovie. Programs like these allow you to edit your
videos, add soundtracks, and compress file sizes.
If you choose to use the YouTube Uploader, your video can be up to 1GB
in size. Learn how to use the YouTube Uploader to upload large or
multiple files here.
Can I upload videos that are longer than 10 minutes?
You can no longer upload videos longer than ten minutes regardless of
what type of account you have. Users who had previously been allowed to
upload longer content still retain this ability, so you may
occasionally see videos that are longer than ten minutes. You can,
however, easily change your account type to Director, Comedian,
Musician, or Guru, which offer a variety of other features like the
ability to add a custom logo, tour date information, and links to other
websites.
Is there a limit to how many videos I can upload?
We don't have any limit for the number of videos you can upload, and
don't foresee adding a ceiling anytime in the future. So start making
videos and upload as many as you'd like—it's more content for the whole
YouTube community to enjoy!
My upload's been running a long time and hasn't completed. What should I do?
Uploading a video can take several hours, depending on the length of
your video and the demand on the servers. If your video upload is
taking longer than 24 hours to complete, we recommend canceling the
upload, checking the length and settings for your video, and uploading
it again.a
Please make sure any firewall software you may have is allowing the
connection to our server. If you're on a corporate or school network
the connection may be blocked. You might want to check with your
network administrator to find out what restrictions your network's
under.
What does "Invalid file format error" mean?
"Invalid file format error" means that your video is in a format that
our system doesn't accept. We accept most file formats, including .wmv,
.mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and
still won't upload, it may be due to a problem with the video
compression you are using. We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid, SVQ3)
format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to
these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better
on YouTube.
If you're using Windows Movie Maker, it's also possible that you tried
to upload your .MSWMM file. This is not an actual movie file. An .MSWMM
file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. If you're satisfied with
your movie, choose the "Publish Movie" or "Save Movie File" option
(depending on which version you have) under the "File" menu and create
a movie file such as .avi or .wmv.
